OP - Please clarify. Are you asking to satisfy your curiosity ... or because you've defaulted on a car loan and are wondering how long it will be before you can safely walk away without paying?
Since auto values steadily depreciate, yet, the unpaid outstanding balance remains the same, my guess (and hope) is that creditors retain the option to go after the amount owed in other ways (ie; garnishing one's salary, filing a lien against other property or accounts, etc.).
