putting in Zero income for her, filing status head of household (which, as a single parent, she is), standard deduction, she is eligible for a refund of $1400 for a refundable tax credit (goes to people with kids under a certain age - 16 I think).

Seems to me it is worth it to file a return even without income and for her to claim the child. And if she is smart, she will put it in a bank account in her name only.
How can she get money back. I did her taxes, and it netted zero. I wonder if I did single?.
And this calculator is for 2018 taxes, isn't it?

It might be time for the 27 year old to pick up the adult responsibilities of handling this all

Sometimes life throws ya curveball.. Another topic, another day.
Also, that calculator must be for people filing next year. I just did hers as head of household, no income, and her baby as a dependent. No earned income available or return at all.

Yes, it's a 2018 calculator but most tax credits for people with children, particularly singles, are on the books already. Did you use a tax program to calculate? It's not the earned income credit since she has no income, but there are other credits available.

You said you washed your hands of it.
Why not do that?

I think she is the only one that can claim a dependent. However if you are supporting then you might be able to claim the baby.

See https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/whom-ma...as-a-dependent
heck, if he is supporting them by giving the three of them free rent, he could claim daughter, grand daughter and boy friend as HIS dependants...rent and utilities is likely 1/2 their costs.. and he is paying for it. OP should discuss this with your wife!
