Nope, nope and nope. Any of these people in my area are receiving very healthy overtime if they're working on a holiday (bus drivers would be the only ones working that day here anyway).
Since a) they don't work on holidays, and b) they make about twice what I do, and c) they aren't supposed to accept, and d) no one ever tipped me for any job, NO, I DO NOT TIP them.
Although not a tip, exactly, I know a couple people who call around to find an open pizzeria, place an order for five or pizza pies, tip the pizza people generously, and (safely) deliver the pizzas during dangerous storms to local fire and rescue in our neighborhood that are working massive hours to service the community.
Those Good Samaritans already have that covered for my area, but when I retire to a different city, if someone isn't doing this, I plan to. I don't think it's so much about a tip, it's about making a special effort to recognize those who labor to serve the public under adverse conditions and let them know they are recognized and appreciated. As poster Southern Man said, he worked in a power plant for years and no one thanked him. I think we should thank those who work to keep us safe, and that includes the local power and telephone people. I have relatives that worked as linesmen for their whole working life. They sacrificed to go out in horrible unsafe conditions, numbing amounts of hours, all to serve the public. They may not make the news, but they deserve our support and thanks. I think I'm going to look up power/telephone maintenance support facilities in my area and give this a try next winter. I have a four wheel SUV and don't mind driving in snow and ice.
