“How to retire in your 30s”
“Tells story of a guy retiring at 42”

And his wife still works.

It’s also not very appealing to me to work the prime years of my life at a high stress 100k job and bank all of it while living like a monk. This guy did that for 15 years. That’s probably part of the reason he hated it so much.

I’d rather do stuff the entire time, while putting away money and still retire a millionaire anyways.

Also, not many people make over 100k solo...and I don’t think it ever mentioned what his wife makes. This article isn’t practical for probably 90%+ of the population.

His wife still works. He's not retired, he's a SAHD.

I laughed at that too but most of those folks were later on in their working careers when they started the process.

Yeah that was definitely a bad example...but I think the concept was good.

Most monks I've known lived fairly well.

Yep. That's not retired. It's male housewife.

It's tough to retire much before age 65 on $1 million net worth if you don't have access to corporate group health insurance. When you read these stories, most aren't "retired". They did a career change and are still working in some way. At age 30, "living off investments" doesn't look so rosy when there's a 40% market correction. It magically turns into "I took a 2 year sabbatical and I'm back being a working stiff again."

ding ding ding.

all these articles are misleading. If you retire and then make thousands writing a blog, you're not retired.

Mr. Jensen was making about $110,000 a year and had benefits, but the stress hardly seemed worth it. He couldn’t unwind with his family after work; he spent days huddled over the toilet.

So instead of looking for a better job, he chose to endure this sort of treatment for fifteen years.

Most people will never reach anywhere close to even a quarter of a million in retirement savings, based on recent articles.
