Helping an elderly family member get their tax refund for 2019 (!)
Had to make adjustments to previous year tax return. IRS mailed a check to an old address. The check was marked as undeliverable, and IRS send a letter with a phone number to call.
When calling that number, we keep on getting redirected to the general automated support which is useless in this case.
Tried making an appointment with IRS but was not able to (the listed phone numbers are saying "unable to assist at this time).
How can we help get the refund back? Seems like it's impossible to get through to the IRS at all...
If you’re still having a hard time getting help from a real live person, try contacting the Taxpayer Advocate Service. It’s an independent office within the IRS that exists to help people with their ongoing tax issues. https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/
My 87 year old mother was audited a few years ago. Yes, it was ridiculous. It also dragged on for almost a year after I submitted the info they wanted. I ended up being referred to an IRS taxpayer advocate who handled it for me rather quickly. She was as offended as I was that out of all the people they could have audited, they chose an 87 year old widow with an agi of less than $120K. My mom got back all the money she was entitled to, plus $300 interest. Here's the link: https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/contact-us/
