Helping an elderly family member get their tax refund for 2019 (!)

Had to make adjustments to previous year tax return. IRS mailed a check to an old address. The check was marked as undeliverable, and IRS send a letter with a phone number to call.

When calling that number, we keep on getting redirected to the general automated support which is useless in this case.

Tried making an appointment with IRS but was not able to (the listed phone numbers are saying "unable to assist at this time).

How can we help get the refund back? Seems like it's impossible to get through to the IRS at all...

Try this:

Or

Or see if you can find a number that could help your case here:

They only take calls if YOU owe them money. Government is broke and a bunch of freeloaders.

I hear they moved out in the middle of the night.

Call during non peak hours and not on a Monday or Friday. Call very early in the morning.

You might even try weekends.

You could try filing a change of address form, I don't know if it would help them resend the check, but it won't hurt to try.

Or find out when the physical local office will open up & head on in.

Contact the family member’s Congressman’s office. That’s how you get the attention of any Federal agency.

My 87 year old mother was audited a few years ago. Yes, it was ridiculous. It also dragged on for almost a year after I submitted the info they wanted. I ended up being referred to an IRS taxpayer advocate who handled it for me rather quickly. She was as offended as I was that out of all the people they could have audited, they chose an 87 year old widow with an agi of less than $120K. My mom got back all the money she was entitled to, plus $300 interest. Here's the link: https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/contact-us/

Good luck.
