How many wait until the last minute? I was surprised at how many in my small town do! Two things:

Even if you know you will owe, you can file any time; you don't have to pay until April 15th, and

Even if you file for an extension, if you don't pay by April 15th, they will penalize you.

I know, I thought the same thing: What good is the extension if you still have to pay by 4/15 ??

The purpose of the extension, Form 4868 Application For Automatic Extension Of Time, is to have more time to receive 1099s, K-1s and other tax documents in the mail, as many issuers can encounter delays in calculating, printing and mailing such documents.
However, anyone who wants to put off filling in their 1040 can do so by filing an extension by today, April 15, even if such documents are not part of your own tax picture.
But you must calculate a closely accurate estimation of how much tax you owe, and include that payment with the extension form.

it's time to protest the IRS. Next year, we should gather in Texas and not pay our taxes. We should cite a declaration as to why we refuse and hold out. If enough people got behind this movement, perhaps we could bring some actual change to this country. You can't get the attention of the bureaucrats until you cut off their money supply. What do you say guys?

Done, checked about 100X, then checked again, and emailed. Whew.

Then, like a nincompoop, remembered when I was out, running errands, that I needed some stamps. Where did I end up? In line at the post office.

Gotta wonder where my brain goes on vacation -- I wish I'd been with it. The line actually wasn't too bad. Unlike the line at Christmas, this one moved pretty fast.

We filed early thought we were all done then what do you know, Fed ex showed up at 9 this morning with a letter from my husband's payroll dept. They screwed up our withholdings and so we had to rush and file an amended return today. But now we are all done and everything is fixed and good now.
