Do you guys know the one I'm talking about? The huge eyesore on Graduate Hospital that takes up a nice big chunk of land in the SW corner of the neighborhood and sits right on the Schuylkill. It's awful looking and I'm not entirely sure if it is still even operational.

Has anyone heard any news on this thing? Is it going to be torn down ever? I know that the new CHOP building and mixed-use area is under construction right next door, so that is at least a good sign.

I was thinking that it would be great to clear it out, and build a beautiful water-front park there. There is a ton of land there, and to imagine an actual large piece of green, undisturbed land right in a very great neighborhood...well, I just think it would be great.

Anyway...anyone have any news on this place?

EDIT:
Found this article. That was in 2012 though. Confirmed that is not operational. I guess the hold up is finding a buyer.

There's an old, unused, PECO power plant next door to Penn Treaty Park in Fishtown that has just recently been set to be torn down, or whatever, will happen to it. It was probably inactive for years. So the old plant you are talking about may be there for a while. Maybe CHOP will eventually "force" the issue of demolishing it.
Depends, obviously, on who owns it now.

The veolia steam plant is very much operational. It was modernized about ten years ago and still has 300 customers (mostly big ones I'd imagine) according to that article. Only the people generating station was shut down

Here is a more recent article. The steam plant was converted to natural gas so at least it is cleaner than it was, but doubt it's going anywhere after that investment and the demand for district-wide steam.

Well thanks guys for filling me in.

While I do enjoy the fact that they're emitting clean energy, I guess it would be nice if it wasn't such an eyesore. Oh well!

I actually like the look of some of those old plants and factories.
