I'm looking for a furnished rental single family home for six months in Tempe or Chandler with the possibility of longer term. What is the best way of finding this? I'm here on a work contract. The contract could go to a permanent job in which case I might buy a home, but in the meantime I just need something temporary. Please help!

You are going to have a hard time finding something furnished. ASU professors going on sabbatical somewhere might be a source, but there's no centralized place to find those, and there wouldn't be that many. You'd have better luck going unfurnished and picking up some inexpensive used furniture on CL (and/or renting some) that you could sell/return or keep.

Observer53 is correct, IMO. And it's what we did when we moved from Phoenix to Raleigh - it wasn't as bad as we thought it would be.

But his/her mention of sabbaticals made me remember something SabbaticalHomes.com - Academic Home Rental Exchange Sitting - est 2000 Yes, it's primarily for home exchanges, but some will rent out their properties. Worth a look. Also consider looking at VRBO.com - but expect to pay a higher price. And there's always the extended stay suites. . .

You could check a site like VRBO and see if you can work a deal with one of the owners to make it affordable. Usually these places are rented by the week and can get quite pricey, but if 3 of your months are in off-peak times (like right now for example), they might be a bit more flexible with the pricing.

It's worth a shot...

Other option would be a furnished extended stay motel - this comes up often in threads. If you do a search on the forum for "extended stay" you will find a number of recommended places from people who have used them when they were in transition, as you are.

Hahaha JKgourmet - I was obviously typing this as the same time as you. Great minds think alike!

There are also some furnished or partially furnished listings in the Multiple Listing Service.

Default extended stay suites seem to have a lot of druggies

I tried a couple of them. Nobody ever bothered me. I just went to work and minded my business. They were nice enough inside. Not an ideal place to stay for long.
