Anyone have a list of what channels, if any, Cox is broadcasting in Clear-QAM? I've been thinking about picking up a TV-Tuner card for my computer to record a few TV shows, but I don't want to get another converter box (as it would largely defeat the whole purpose of using the card in the computer).

From what I've been able to gather from searching Google, some cable systems broadcast some channels without encryption, so any digital TV tuner can tune them without a converter box, and these are what they call Clear-QAM. Typically it's all the local channels you would get with an antenna anyways, so there is no point for them to encrypt them, and some of the basic cable channels.

I've been trying to find a list of these channels, but not finding anything one way or the other on Cox in Phonenix, only a ton of threads on different media or home theater forums trying to get HDTV channels. I just care about the content, not whether I get it in high defintion or standard definition.

You can get channels 1-63 without a convertor box (assuming you have COX cable expanded service subscription, 1-20 otherwise). I've got some TVs hooked up without a box.

You can find a list of the station names for those channels here:

Channel lineup serving Arizona | Cox Communications

You can get the local stations in HD without a box as long as the TV has an HD tuner.

The local channels are available in Clear QAM as are a few others. This list may or may not be up to date. Cox tends to change them without notice and does not attempt to support the idea. So the numbers on the list may be off, but the available channels are probably pretty close, at least they are consistent with what was out there the last time that I looked.
