I'm wondering approximately how much to expect to spend to replace a clay tile roof on a 1500 sq foot home (sq footage does not include the garage... not sure how many more feet a standard two car garage adds). This is for a one story home in a NW valley suburb home. Can anyone get me in the ballpark, please?

I suspect that you're looking around $15k if you're using clay (as opposed to concrete tiles). I'm looking into it for a home build and was quoted about $40k (or more) to cover a 4000+ sq ft home. My understanding is that the a "subroof" needs to be installed. It aint cheap, but shop around.

Your tiles are likely concrete and they are not usually replaced, but stacked to the side and then the felt paper underneath is removed and replaced and tiles put back on. It's the paper that seals the roof. The tiles are just there for decoration and to protect the roofing paper from UV light. There are always a few that are broken or they break during the process so some new ones are needed. Cost depends on how complex the roof is. I paid $9K to have mine done on a 2400 sf house with a fairly complex roof set up. Get a few quotes as it was my experience that they vary quite a bit.

In theory, couldn't getting a "new roof" be cheaper then getting a new shingle roof, because there is no cost of new shingles?
