Is there anyway to subscribe to the Arizona Republic without going on an automatic payment program where after your great deal promo period ends (6 months or a year), they automatically charge your credit card or withdraw money from your bank account for whatever the regular rate is unless you contact them who knows how long prior to that date to cancel? Is there a way to subscribe where you can pay by credit card monthly or write a check and the newspaper company not keep it on file to automatically charge?

I often see deals for $1 a week for Sunday and Wednesday home delivery, but then the fine print is loaded with going on automatic payment, being charged extra for premium editions and the Thanksgiving edition. I am very hesitant to give my credit card or bank account info for a newspaper subscription that has an automatic payment clause. I've read a plethora of reviews on the hassles of cancelling and getting charges refunded.

Subscribed four years. Year ago this week, gave up. Money orders used, pre-paid, up to six months in advance. Two different states were used for receivables. It got messy with this method. Gave up trying to straighten their accounting out. Customer service is something to be desired, I would never give them banking information nor my e-mail address. Some of this sensitive identity will be offered elsewhere. I'd never risk it. You are wise to question their actual intent.

Love auto-payment; have subscribed to the Republic e-version online for years. The only problem has been them changing their software once and interrupting the auto-payment. Then we have to re-subscribe.

Also subscribe by auto-payment to the e-versions online of five or six other newspapers for years, even decades. Some of them have been auto-pay for a long time. Payments appear on your statement online or paper mail; can always cancel, but don't -- very convenient and safe.

I signed up for a year's E-edition when they ran a $20 special a few months back. I can deal with one debit a year.

I'm wary of anything that gives someone access to my money. Tell them you don't have a credit card and will pay by check.

Actually, I find that generally people who really actually newspapers and actual magazines tend to be better-informed people.

Perhaps it's because they tend to take news more seriously. Perhaps it's because it means then have more respect for serious journalism. Perhaps it's because people seem to have a better attention span with physical papers.

It is too bad they have automatic payment and renewal clauses. I'm sure that is keeping many people from subscribing.

We pay once every 6 months by credit card and there is no auto payment or automatic renewal to us. We've been a subscriber for 50+ years.
