i believe it's a full year - you could go part time at a local community college (the main tuition jump is over 6 credits) and work pt for the first year to establish residency

at community college, they also test your resdency status and it is also a year (at least it was for estrella mountain CC).

you have to prove your residency status at ASU. i had to do it for the spring semester of 2008 and it was a pain inthe a ss!!!!!!! it's not easy but definitely worth it because the out of state rates are ridiculous. also, consider the tuition hike on EVERYBODY coming soon, especially for incoming freshmen. it ain't a pretty sight.

It's easy to provie this - just get a driver's license or electric bill or rental agreement or etc etc.

Just ask them so you can get a definate answer, but I think it is 1 year. However, let's say you you are at 10 months in november when you enroll and you are tagged (like cattle) as a out of stater. By the time classes start in january you can show them that you are a resident for a year and you can pay the in-state tuition fees. Applying as an out of state won't make any difference, it only will for tution purposes.

yep

my brother moved out here with the thought about possibly going to college -all schools take a year and definitely get your drivers license and some sort of bill right away

what I was saying with community colleges, is if you look at their tuition schedule, out of state tuition doesn't sky rocket until you go above part time ...... it's still a bit more, but not insane - would allow you to get a couple of the basics out of the way

mikec34 is right ... the situation he described was exactly what i had to do. i moved here in january 2007 and applied for the spring 2008 semeser. basically, they still label you as "out of state" and what you need to do is petition to be considered a resident.

if it is clear that you've lived here a year, then yes, the process is a lot simpler!

But what about that 2 tax years of financial independence? Im going to be out of high school. Couldn't I just live in Arizona for a year without those 2 tax years of financial independence?

The thing I don't understand is why the 2 tax years of financial independence? Why don't they just raise make people live in Arizona for 24 months instead of 12? Something not right here.
