To answer the question, the job market in PHX sucks. This economy is dependent on construction and services.

Compared to places like Las Vegas where do they have a one trick economy and a 15 percent unemployment rate to go along with it, we are doing great because we have a very diverse economy.

Open your eyes and you'll see.

Hilarious post. I know you didn't mean for it to be, but it was. Well done.

I am in the Accounting Management field. I definately could not survive on $10 hr or less. I am making over twice that right now. THis really bites the big one though. .... it is too expensive to live here much less OWN here. I don't like the cold weather and reality is setting in that I might not be getting out anytime soon with the economy being such. You know how when you really wanna do something that you think will produce happiness and have faith that it will be okay and then your GUT tells you don't even think about it!! I guess I should be glad the gut is kicking in because I don't want to be kicking myself somewhere in the near future. Unemployment is bad here in Seattle too, although I have a stable job, not much chance of them getting rid of me unless the company goes down all together. Although I am not happy here. I would be alot unhappier spending all my savings and then not knowing what to do!!!! So I really appreciate your input all!!

Apply on-line whenever you see an opening. Eventually someone will hire you. My experience was for every fifteen applications I got one interview, and fifty or so applications landed one job offer (different career field, though). So apply, apply, apply. Don't get too down in the dumps. Keep at it and something will work out.

To clarify the $10 an hour thing, I am a master of living frugal, so I actually live quite good on it. Nevada has no state income tax, so I take home $1,360 every 4 works after taxes. This is off of $9.50 an hour. This is how I do it....

$450 a month total for rent, utilities, internet and digital cable. This is for sharing a 2 bedroom condo off the strip with a roommate. I found it on craigslist.

$280 a month...I set a $10 a day limit for daily essentials such as food, beer, etc.

$40 a month in gas

$38 a month for car insurance, I paid for my car in cash so I have no payments.

When all is said and done, I have $590 left over each month to do whatever I want with. Most of that just goes into savings. This is how I just got my new $999 Sharp 32 inch LED flat screen television. I spent more for that television than I did my car LOL

I like your outlook! This is the age of lowered expectations and the majority of us will need to live simpler to survive. That is the new reality in this mad, mad world. The fact that you can do it while ignoring the constant pressure to be a showy consumer is admirable.

Thanks. One thing I should clarify is I actually have $550 a month left over, not $590. I pay my insurance six months in advance, which is $230, which in turn works out to $38 a month.

Absolutely nothing! I've been applying for jobs for minimum wage knowing i would only make $20 more than unemployment.

Though one good thing out of this lay off is i am reducing my living costs. Putting my motorcycle into storage and paying storage insurance, canceling registration, taking the bus, moving into a place that includes utilities and w/d. I am able to attend 13 credits with no issues at all. I may pickup more than 13 this next semester. I am able to spend more time with my wife and give me time to think. Hello science and math, i love you

We will be settled for years.
