I just wanted some compact with greater than 3x zoom. I just couldn't break down to get a big bulky SLR.
I cannot wait to get it since it also does video in 'hi - def'.
Personally I find the multiplier way (3X, 4X) way of describing zooms fairly useless at best and misleading at worst, as it doesn't in any way define the outer limits of the zoom range - and this is often important depending on the kind of pictures you take the most.
Many people seem to favour long telephoto range above wide angle, but I always find I take about 100 pictures at fairly close range for every time I need to take a photo of something far away. In 35mm film terms (still commonly - and in my opinion, more usefully - used to describe digital zoom focal lengths) I prefer those that will go to about 28mm wide versus those that are 35-38mm at the widest end (which unfortunately is the majority). This wide angle really helps in everything from indoor photos and city streets all the way through to landscapes and more creative compositions. For this reason when buying a compact to supplement my DSLR I went for the only Canon that goes that wide, the SD800. It's a gorgeous little thing, small, lightweight, fast start up, superb battery life, image stabilization - what's not to love?
The next time I'll upgrade my DSLR is when Nikon brings out the 16.7 or 17.8 mp they are stirring in the rumor pot right now.
Im waiting for Canon to come out with their upgraded 5D to upgrade mine. Im sure it will be around $2300 though so I may just have to settle for the reduced price 5Ds.
I think for most people the correct answer was stated as "when the camera can't do what you want to do".
I try and upgrade whenever there's a new body. More megapixel is huge for what I do. I need speed and lots of resolution so when there's more, that's when I upgrade. My wife gets my old stuff and we sell the stuff she doesn't want anymore.
