Help! I am trying to put a 1 px border around a postage stamp. I have selected the rectangle marquee, got the moving dashes around the stamp but it will not put the black border. Help please!

The marquee is a selection tool. You can't use that. You have to use the Rectangle tool. I still have not found a way to do that as well (I started another thread here but got no response). Workaround might be to create a layer in a different color (like your border's color) and merge the layers together.

Easiest way for me to go to Image > Canvas Size > add 2 pixels to width and 2 pixels to height > select desired color

edit - just realized you may mean adding a box inside the image, not around the whole image. Rectangle tool is a pain - it never looks right to me but you can use it by selecting the box that just has an outline where it says "style" - but I don't know if you can select the pixel width. Alternatively, try the line tool, I know you can select width with that.

Here is a good tutorial, you can skip steps you don't want.
