Group: Can't find an answer online, thought some of you might know...

About 25 years ago I bought a Minolta X-700 with some VERY good lenses.

I find that Minolta merged with Konica in 2003, and in 2006 Konica-Merger sold off their camera biz to Sony, who now makes digital cams.

About 10 years ago I bought a Nikon Coolpix 995 which is not doing so well right now. I recharge the batteries, put one in the camera and it indicates a full battery, but I only get a few pix taken before the low battery warning shows. Not sure if I have a camera problem or a battery problem. The little door that holds the memory cards is broke and I keep it taped closed. Point is that I'm due for a new digital cam.

Well, my old X-700 works fine, but I was wondering: Can my good lenses, zooms and filters be re-used on any of the new digital SLR's?

Any of the new Sony DSLR's should accept your Minolta lenses. My wife and I shoot with Sony DSLR's and would happy to take them off your hands.....

Bydand also shoots with a Sony, he is much more familiar with the lenses and compatibility than I am. I would send him a DM and see what he has to say.

No they will NOT work. The only "family" of lenses from Minolta that will work are the auto focus ones sold for the Minolta Maxxum cameras. The X-700 camera bodies use the "SR" mount on the lenses, the Maxxum camera bodies and the Sony DSLR bodies use the "A" or Alpha mount lenses. You can buy an adapter to use the older "SR" mount lenses on the newer bodies, but you lose the ability to focus to infinity (which pretty much renders them useless IMHO). Plus the adapters add another piece of glass between the lens and the sensor which usually isn't a good thing.

The Minolta lenses that will work on the Sony bodies have "AF lens" on them. All the older "SR" mount lenses will have either "MC" or "MD" on them.

For the filters, it would depend on what diameter they are. A lot of my old glass has smaller front elements than even my 25 year old Minolta AF glass so you would have to try them. About the only really useful filters for digital are the Polarizer, Neutral Density, close-up, and a few of the special effects filters that just make life easier than manipulating the images in PhotoShop. The color ones (like warming/cooling/sepia/etc...) can be done as well if not better in a photo program afterward.
