I was bored so I downloaded the entire spreadsheet from the FBI to see every city's violent crimes per 100,000 people. Pittsburgh had 802 violent crimes per 100,000 people. That makes it the #58 most dangerous city (of over 100,000 people) in the country, sandwiched between #57 Anchorage and #59 New Orleans.

If anyone is curious about the crime rate in your particular city/town, I'd be happy to look it up. The spreadsheet lists some 9,000 different cities and towns, not just the big cities.

I thought New Orleans would be much more dangerous than Pittsburgh.

Can you look up McKees Rocks?

New Orleans actually has the most murders per 100,000 (58) than any other city with a population over 100,000. I guess they just don't have a lot of other violent crimes.

Of course the first town somebody asks me to lookup isn't listed. Maybe because McKees Rocks is just a borough? I really don't know why it isn't included in the database.

Wow that's a lot. I'd like to see how Pittsburgh and other large cities rank among only the 100 largest cities by population. IMO you're comparing apples and oranges by lumping all of the places in one list.

Looking at only the top 100 cities, (smallest population: Gilbert, AZ with 211,404), Pittsburgh is the #32 most dangerous, again sandwiched between Anchorage and New Orleans.

Most Dangerous (100 largest cities):
1. Detroit (2,137 violent crimes per 100,000)
2. St. Louis
3. Oakland
4. Memphis
5. Birmingham
6. Atlanta
7. Baltimore
8. Stockton, CA
9. Cleveland
10. Buffalo
...
13. Philly (1,193 violent crimes per 100,000)
...
100. Irvine, CA (56 violent crimes per 100,000)

I've never thought of Buffalo as a dangerous city. I'm surprised it's in the top 10 (I still don't consider it dangerous at all). One would think Baltimore and Philly would be higher, the way people talk. St. Louis is a beautiful city, in spite of its high crime ranking.

I'm surprised by some of those cities in the top 10. Guess I don't get out of my bubble enough.

I was planning to go to Memphis for a workshop later this month. Crime never crossed my mind.

Memphis is a pit. I would frequently go there for training while working for my former employer in DC, and outside of Beale Street and the immediate central business district many of the other neighborhoods are impoverished slums with intimidating-looking people loitering all day. I walked all the way from our suburban hotel to Beale Street and back one day just to "explore" a bit and felt very uneasy as I trekked through some areas where people were shouting racial slurs at me (I'm white) from their porches---in broad daylight.

That city is also long overdue for an extremely powerful earthquake, which is one more reason I'd never want to return.
