Is there a good local or grocery story bakery here in Pittsburgh that makes good birthday cakes? Are the ones at Giant Eagle any good?

Prantl's in Shadyside is very good (we got our wedding cake there in fact), and apparently now they have a location in Market Square as well (which I have never tried).

I also think the cakes at Giant Eagle are fine for a casual birthday.

I'd tell you to make your own, but I don't know if anyone sells "Bavarian Whipping Cream" there.... it's the BEST for frosting a raspberry filled chocolate cake.... (It's a heavy sweetened whipping cream....)

Closer to town you can try the Priory on the North Side.

Agreed.

It's only a 15-20 minute drive from the East End neighborhoods. Definitely worth the drive.

Oakmont is great and so is Prantl's. I think Prantl's opened a bakery in Market Square, in the old Jenny Lee store.
