Kid from Plum wins the singles title over there. First American to win since John McEnroe.

I know there are very few tennis fans in the Pittsburgh area, but this is pretty impressive for a kid to be that good come out of an area that is weak in this sport.

Not sure about the parents, but this has not been done since 1977. Pretty amazing. Hope he continues and does well as a pro next year or so.

I read somewhere that he was named after tennis great Bjorn Borg.

This a great feat for any american. The surface of red clay is the hardest surface in tennis for American's to master. We just don't have many clay courts in this country. ( Frick Park does have them ) In reality this might be one of the year's top performance by any local athlete. It will be exciting to watch Bjorn mature on the court and make his move. Awesome stuff.. BTW... waited one hour for a open court up at Schenley Park yesterday. If you go there you would assume tennis was still on fire like back in the 70's and 80's. Officially the numbers playing the sport are rising nationally after a long fall. And Pittsburgh has a decent tennis community between the private clubs and public facilities.

We were just getting lessons for our 5-year-old on the clay courts at Frick this afternoon--I wonder if Bjorn played there?

Take it from a good tennis player that played on the Florida circuit. Pittsburgh is weak as far as really good players. I called my old doubles partner from my Florida circuit days and he told me, he doubts Bjorn is still in Pittsburgh. I looked into it and he had to move to Florida to be amongst players that can touch him. He did play at Plum for a bit when he was really young, but he can't be expected to play against kids that he would crush into nothing in a few minutes.

He is where he needs to be. Florida. Believe me, no adult would touch him in our area. Heck, I am still a really good player in this area, and I feel I am not very good at all.

There's an old house not far from me that has an old tennis court in the backyard that is hard to see b/c it's behind so many trees. When the property was for sale I had the opportunity during an open house to walk the premises. I was surprised to find the surface of the court was clay! There are more clay courts around here than is realized.
