Highmark, WPAHS finalize deal - Pittsburgh Business Times

Note the ER at West Penn is supposed to reopen. In a related note, Forbes is applying to become a trauma center:

Forbes Regional to be trauma center - Pittsburgh Business Times

In general, I'd suggest the planned Highmark investments in Forbes are part of the answer to the "Monroeville renaissance" question that came up in another thread.

This is great news! West Penn had a very good ER and the loss of jobs from the partial closing of West Penn was bad for Bloomfield. It's great to see that UPMC will have some competition again in the East End when it comes to choosing an ER.

Great news. I really like West Penn. Hope this merger works out and people can have more choices.

Does this mean the doctors who got kicked out of West Penn will be able to go back?

I have a friend whose dad worked at the West Penn ER and apparently they called him last week about coming back to the hospital if they were able to open the ER again.

What about the ones who aren't in the ER, but who had practices on the upper floors, Mellon Pavilion, etc.?

I'm a resident at AGH/West Penn and I know some of the surgeons who worked at West Penn (and who currently are working at AGH) are coming back to West Penn. If the ER reopens, you need to have a certain number of specialties available anyways, so I expect by sometime next year, West Penn will be back to most of the normal services that it had before it closed.

I don't think that they closed that unit- its still open.

Personally I'm glad to see West Penn going back to full service- UPMC really didn't have any competition in the east end for ER work.

They never closed a lot of things. The burn unit is one. The NICU is another.

I doubt I'll have much reason to use West Penn ER for anything, but I did in the past and am happy it was there and will be again.
