I'm guessing the weather forecast may be the issue. Anyways, Denny's in Harmarville is open on Thanksgiving and Christmas, as well as Boston Market in Shadyside.

Jack's Bar over on the south side will be open beginning at 7 a.m. on Thanksgiving. In the afternoon, they do cook turkey out on the sidewalk.

All kidding aside, there are a few useful things open on Thursday. Grocery stores will be open until mid-afternoon, at least some of them. I was at Whole Foods today in Wexford, and I assume the one down on Centre will be similarly open until I think it was 4 or 5pm. They'll probably have some extra prepared food out for last-minute grabs.

A lot of regular restaurants do close except for the ones who serve Thanksgiving dinner, and those often need reservations in advance. Houlihan's has been open the last couple years with a buffet and may not be that hard to get into.

Movie theaters will be open at least some part of the evening. Maybe not all of them but most of them will be.

Some bars should be open. Given the way some folks' Thanksgivings turn out, that would be a necessity.

I have to think it's something other than the supposed weather though. Too early to be bagging it. I'll be driving out of here on Tuesday afternoon and following that damn storm north. Already have built in extra time with an overnight so not changing plans.

UPitt has a free, formal Thanksgiving dinner event for international students; however, non-international students can attend for $32. It looks like the deadline has passed, but maybe if you give them a call, they can squeeze you in.

If it was me, I'd do do one of the volunteer activities happening around town that day. It's something different to do, you're with other people, and it makes you genuinely thankful.

Pittsburgh Holiday Volunteer Opportunities

The site also has links to fancy places to eat out, inexpensive/take out places that are open on Thanksgiving, and local Thanksgiving events.

This goes perfect with previous advice to the OP to get involved in volunteer work to help him meet people. Also, doing something like this is a humbling experience, and puts anyone's complaints about life in a different perspective.
