Haha, I'll concede that it's not exactly a hard hitting news source. But for something free that I can pick up at the bus stop, their news section isn't too shabby.

Oh yeah, sometimes my girlfriend will watch the 6:00 news AND the 11:00 news. It's 90% the same stories, with the same previously taped interviews and all.

If the nuclear plant down the Ohio river leaked, we wouldn't hear about it until after the commercials.

They'd lead with a nuclear leak only if there was a Steelers tie-in.

Local news has really gone down hill. The newspapers don't carry much local news compared to what they used to carry in the past, especially the Post-Gazette. They seem like they only want to do the investigative reporting that is published as a multi-day series. I usually enjoy reading those investigative reports, but it seems they don't leave much resources for local reporting.

The problem with the TV stations is the need to sensationalize and compete with the other stations. I really don't care that it is "news you will only hear on 11." I also don't care for all the interviews with the people who happened to be walking down the street when the fire started or the old lady who lives next door to the murder victim. Rarely do these interviews add much other than to show how poor many people's grammar is.

They knocked on my door wanting to interview someone after my neighbor's house burned down. I refused. I watched them walk around the neighborhood knocking on doors for a few hours. Nobody wanted to be interviewed. I realized how much it must suck to be a news reporter in the field for a local station. They are like vultures. We went through a horrific ordeal the night before trying to save lives before the fire department arrived. It was one of the most terrifying events I've ever experienced. That last thing I wanted to do was talk to a reporter.

Doesn't help that when it came some of the biggest local stories, all the local outlets were scooped by places like CNN and the UK's Daily Mail. If it doesn't involve a vapid Top 10 list or the anniversary of the Immaculate Reception, the local print media isn't interested. TV news is even worse: bad traffic, bad weather, shooting, car accident on remote rural road, repeat.

Reddit is a decent enough aggregator of local news: /r/Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh's front page of the internet So much so that Pittsburgh Magazine uses it as a source (attributed or otherwise) for 80% of its online content.

Thanks for that post, SolitaryThrush. I found something really cool on Reddit I'd like to try.

Years ago we had an incident on our street and KDKA sent Jon Shumway(sp) out to do a spot. I told my wife and was going to take off my shirt, grab a beer, and go out to talk to him. Luckily, she's the smart one and talked me out of it. Woulda been great!
