The lunches aren't 'free'. Someone is paying for them.

Is this federal money?

Yes. In my first post I said it was the result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.

They they should be referred to as 'taxpayer-funded lunches', as that is what they are.

There's no such thing as a 'free' lunch.

Well then so should the non-toll roads, first thing that leaps to mind. After all, they are not really "free" either, are they?

They act like giving meals to kids at school for free is an awful thing to do. This is why they lost in 2012.

Everything paid for with government money is taxpayer-funded.

I've never heard anyone refer to roads as 'free'.

That euphemism seems to be reserved for welfare.

The point of this exercise seems to be giving the kids whose parents actually pay federal taxes and thus don't get welfare the illusion that they too are getting something for free. When in reality, their family is paying for their lunch as well as other kids' lunches.

A large percentage of children on the free and reduced lunch program do have working parent who is paying taxes too. The problem is you get the people who don't want to give funding to FAMILIES of any tax bracket. They even complain about having to pay for school taxes when they don't have children. They fail to see the educating the next generation of workers is good for society.

School taxes are a whole different bucket of taxes than the one we're discussing now. Mostly, they're local, and more difficult to avoid, though those who get federally-subsidized 'rental assistance' manage that too.

Ha, ha, ha. Thanks for that laugh! For those of us that have to ALWAYS pay full boat, I can assure you, it gets a bit old. How about the super rich pay more. Goodness! We have military/fear spending that is on top of everything, so this lunch thing is a bit much!
