You may want to call on the Urban League of Pittsburgh at 610 Wood Street here.

They have housing counselors that have lists of rentals that are available and in Section 8.

You've got a tall order here, rents in good neighborhoods are usually above what Section 8 is willing to pay the landlords.

Some landlords in good areas might be in the program merely to help their destitute relatives, and aren't really open to the general Section 8 public.

A more realistic goal might be to find a place in a run-down but safe area of the region

Have a look at the Housing Authority page.

By definition, if a landlord is desperate enough to accept Section 8, it's no longer a "good" neighborhood.

Section 8 provides a steady income stream for the landlord, its not all negativity.

Depends on what the market rate is for the property, as opposed to what the housing authority is willing to pony up.

A community can have low rental rates to make Section 8 profitable and still be a decent enough place.

Recently I had a coworker tell me she was turned down for rental of a house because she *wasn't* Section 8.

Of course it is.

Unless the landlord has the business sense of a granny smith apple, he will try to get the highest rent possible. When Section 8 pays better than market rate -- OR when the stock of prospective tenants is so poor your need some sort of government "guarantee" that they won't default on the rent -- the neighborhood is, indeed, "bad".

Not necessarily, government guidelines for what a "fair" rent for a specific area aren't always that terribly accurate or fine tuned.

Of course landlords try to get the highest rent possible, if the housing authority is willing to pay more than the market rate, it just means that the particular area isn't that popular with the supply of prospective tenants, a group that doesn't have perfect knowledge
