Yesterday was the first time since September 10, 2013 that the temperature officially reached 90° in Pittsburgh.

Somehow I get the sense it won't be the only time this summer either, given the ridge of high pressure over the Deep South that's become recurrent in the last month or so. The prevailing weather pattern since May reminds me a bit of 1993, with a recurrent ridge over the Deep South, storminess from the Great Plains to the upper Great Lakes, and cooler-than-normal temperatures in the interior West. Not that the pattern has been totally static, just that that's how it's been more often than not in the last four to six weeks.

I have a feeling we're going to have a summer like 2012, which I remember well because I had my son on July 1 of that year. Being a thousand months pregnant in this kind of weather was so miserable. And then having a newborn wasn't that much better because we were pretty much trapped at home.

The big difference with 2012 is that the core of the heat was in Texas and the southern Great Plains, while this year it appears to be developing in the Deep South. If this pattern holds somewhat steady, the Northeast will have a hotter summer than the Midwest. In 2012, the Midwest had a hotter summer than the Northeast. (In fact, the summer of 2011 was hotter in the Northeast than the summer of 2012 was.)

I hope it can be like 1994 where the rest of the summer after June was relatively temperate.

Make that two days in a row. The 4PM observation had the temperature right at 90°, and it's possible that it got even higher than that in between hourly observations. So that's already two more 90° days this year than Pittsburgh had all last year.

Sometimes I think living in Upstate NY would be better for me from late May to early September.

Speak for yourself. I was able to handle yesterday MUCH better as someone who works outdoors than when the wind chill was -10 (or lower). I swear people take longer to answer their front doors in the winter intentionally so their delivery drivers turn into popsicles waiting for them.

I don't mind the colder temps as much as I can always bundle up, ditch the clothing while working inside, and then throw a coat on if I need to retrieve something from the truck while I'm there. What has always made winter worse for me is the fact that people don't treat their driveways or walk so you're expected to traverse a hockey rink. Its dangerous whether you're trying to get a 50lb tool bag or a 1,000lb La Cornue Grand Palais into someone's house.
