Every city of any size had these at one time. The only Pittsburgh ones that show up in Trip Advisor are the expensive chain hotels. Example is Wilkes-Barre's Hotel Hart, which was demolished decades ago.

There aren't many left anywhere in America. Most closed, became SROs or boutique hotels.

I would like to know myself. Here is another example of a grand hotel in Parkersburg, WV. Love staying there.

Historic Blennerhassett Hotel in Parkersburg, West Virginia : The Blennerhassett Hotel

Thanks for responses. The Blennerhassett is a boutique hotel and expensive but at least it's still in operation. There's also the Mountaineer Hotel in Williamson, W.Va., which is more like I had in mind.

Can anyone recall any small multi-story hotels from Pittsburgh's past either downtown in a burb like the Penn Lincoln in Wilkinsburg?

At one time in the early part of the 20th century, little hotels like that were common in any city of substantial size. They were mostly located near railroad stations and primarily served traveling salesmen. I think they may have even been called "Salesmen's hotels. Most had a bar in the lobby and shared bathrooms. The last one I remember in Pittsburgh was on Liberty Avenue where the August Wilson Center now stands.

What about Brewer's on Liberty Ave? I guess it's more of a gay bar now, but architecturally speaking it probably started out as the sort of hotel the OP is looking for, and it seems to still operate as such, no? More or less?

I really only know about it from riding a bus that goes by it, and using Google out of curiosity, so if anyone knows more about the past or present of this place I'd be interested to find out more.

You're right, Brewers was a railroad hotel at one time - forgot all about that. From going there years ago, what is now the bar was at one time the lobby, and I think the tin ceiling is still there. There must have been a staircase that went up tot he rooms, but I don't know where it is. I believe that people are still able to rent rooms upstairs, too. It's not fancy, but it serves a purpose for those who need a place to stay.

Wasn't it the same deal with Round Corner in Lawrenceville? Something like they had a hotel liquor license because of the rooms upstairs above the bar.

Bars can get around that hotel idea with so-called long term room rental, so those places end up being rental units.
