The Mexican War Streets Society is seeking to have the Tudor revivalist building designated as a city historical structure, which would prevent its demolition. .....
The building, purchased by the Salvation Army in the 1970s, has a facade of red brick and limestone, with glazed terra cotta trim, and "it fits with the rhythm and scale of the block of buildings," said David McMunn, president of the Mexican War Streets Society.
The building houses a medical clinic, chapel and homeless drop-in center. Major James LaBossiere, divisional general secretary and Allegheny County coordinator for the Salvation Army, said "the building is inadequate" for the needs of the community and a new facility is needed.
North Side group is working to save former Malta building
Supposing both sides have a point, is there some property where the salvation army can relocate to freeing up the malta building for use in another project?

The now vacant Columbus Middle School is a site that multiple North Side non-profits, including the Salvation Army are eying up, in regards to its potential to be reused for community based outreach and services.
The whole Malta building issue has become very contentious in the Central North Side. I've seen renderings of the Salvation Army's proposed Family recreation center on the property, and I honestly feel it has a much more natural street presence than the existing building, while still fitting the context and scale of the block and surrounding buildings. Much of the underlying tension revolves around whether homeless service providers should remain on North Ave., as some neighborhood residents believe it and Life of Life's presence is scaring away investors from committing to the URA's plans to redevelop the Federal North Corridor.

Let's send some of these facilities to Fox Chapel and Mt Lebanon. I'm only saying this partially tongue in cheek. I can understand how the people who own property over there feel. Too often, these types of facilities get dumped in marginal neighborhoods, ensuring that these places remain marginal. The big problem with the homeless, and the reason why there are so many more of them than there used to be, is that the government no longer wanted to pay to keep the mentally ill in places like Mayview. About half of the homeless are seriously mentally ill, and would have been institutionalized a generation ago. These tend to be the most troublesome of the homeless as well.
