Harold Miller, a consultant and adjunct professor at CMU, has been reviewing monthly jobs data for Pittsburgh on his blog. Here is the latest installment reviewing August data:
Pittsburgh's Future
As he notes, seasonally-adjusted job losses have flattened out this summer in Pittsburgh, whereas they have slowed down but are still continuing a bit nationally. So, we are continuing to outperform the national average during the recession, and are in the better half of the top 40 largest regions. Nonetheless, some local sectors have been hit more than the national average, including manufacturing and temporary workers.
Anyway, hopefully we will see some actual job growth soon. I will also be looking to see if the relative speed of the recovery matches the speed of the decline in various sectors, or if the recession and recovery instead changes the mix of jobs in the area.
