im going to intern in pittsburgh this summer, but i've never been there. i'm trying to find an apartment, so if anyone knows of a good area to get one in that is fairly close (like 30 minutes) to the airport that would help. i'm also wondering about traffic on the morning commute, and i want to get into the local music scene so if anyone has advice on that type of thing i'd appreciate it.

Where exactly is your internship located? 30 minutes from the airport would essentially put you smack in the middle of downtown.

That's right! We could get you much closer to the airport than 30 minutes if that's where you're interning!

Indeed! Robinson, a huge commercial hub of Pittsburgh, is a stone's throw away from the airport. I dare say you wouldn't even have to set foot in Pittsburgh for anything if you didn't want to and if you had a place in Robinson. But do yourself a favor and ignore that advice!!!

Robert Morris University, about 10 minutes from the airport, has a summer intern housing program at reasonable cost in one of its nice new residence halls. There will be a number of interns at local corporations living there this summer. Call the Residence Life office at (412) 262-8206 and ask them for a brochure. Good luck!

I live 30 min from Pittsburgh currently, Harmony/Zelienople/Cranberry are all close to I79 and the turnpike the airport is also 30-40 min from there. This area is North of Pitts. Country, safe and pretty affordable. Cranberry is the most populated I myself don't care for it..lots of shops tho eating. Culture wise tho you won't find anything better than right in Pitts. or the "south side" that part of town is probably what you young ones like (at least my son does he's 26) he's into the music scene. Oakland is a hot spot to. (collage town) Lots of traffic tho in-town way. Pitts. itself is full of one way streets and hills. some pretty bad spots also. Stay away from polish hill! Let me know if theres anything else I could help with. Laura

You dont need to live downtown to be near college aged kids. Robert Morris is right near the airport.

Hm, you are gonna be just about half-way between the city and the airport. If you wanted to completely avoid traffic you could rent a place on that side of the tunnels and could be VERY close to work. You are not far from Robinson at all, PLENTY of shopping, eating, and entertainment. However, if you are looking for a place with college aged kids and a more youthful, trendy, setting, you will have to stay in the city. I think the SouthSide would be your best bet, it looks like a beat up neighborhood but is full of interesting clubs, bars, and young people almost every night and the weekends get packed. You are very lucky because even if you decide to stay in the city, you will always be against the grain of traffic on your commute to Park West Dr!!
