Hey,

I'm planning on moving to Pittsburgh early next year and am in the early stages of picking out an area to investigate a possible move to. I was looking at Monroeville and don't know much about it. Is it considered an uppity area?

A little background on myself so maybe someone could suggest somewhere else:

I'm 26 and a working writer. I'm very much into the arts and stuff but don't necessarily want to live inside Pittsburgh. I figure the suburbs are cheaper but not sure. I've been there numerous times but really only to suburbs on the west side of Pittsburgh where most of my family lives. I'm trying to move somewhere affordable, within good distance to the city and a place where commuting won't be a hassle for work.

Monroeville is not hoity toity. It doesn't have much character, either, though. It's also through a tunnel from the city and that makes it a no-go for me as far as a commute is concerned. Personally, I don't like that area but that's just my preference - other people probably love it (I'm guessing).

I don't know too many people that love Monroeville other than the fact that it's within a 20 minute drive into town depending on the traffic. I think it's very congested in that area and some parts are even becoming an eyesore. If you're not too picky where you want to live, I would look around the North Hills area, perhaps around West View, Ross, etc. Not all of the homes in that area are terribly expensive, you might even find something within your price range.

You could also try Dormont. The 'T' goes right through the center of town, making your commute a breeze.

If your only concern about living in the City is expense, then I would suggest reconsidering because there are some safe, convenient, but inexpensive neighborhoods in the City.

Do you know where work will be?

You sound like a perfect candidate for Lawrenceville. Affordable, and the center of the arts scene in Pgh: Lawrenceville Galleries in Pittsburgh PA, A Lawrenceville Art Gallery Guide (http://www.pittsburghgalleries.com/lawrencevillegalleries.htm - broken link)

You DO NOT want to live in Monroeville.

I know! I laughed when I read the title!

OP, Monroeville isn't good or bad. It's just, well, Monroeville.

Totally agree. Millvale is also another area to consider. People are surprised to learn that there are many artists and creative types in Millvale.
