Because we don't refer to white people as European Americans. It can be deemed offensive because black Americans are Americans, they're not African, plus, many Africans are white.

Sure it is, Ireland is a country, Africa is a continent. No one refers to an Irishman as a European American.

That is totally offensive. I ask, no, demand, that you refer to me incorporating the entire catalog of my ethnic background!!

Ergo:

I am "Vietnamese-Mexican-German American"!!

Get it right.

On a more serious note: not offensive

quite a minority though. you do realize that there is also a small minority that are white but actually look black or vice versa. is it offensive to call those white people black, because of their skin pigmentation disorder?

Doesn't make them any less African. I suggest that we drop the whole hyphenated-American thing any way and just refer to all Americans as American, sadly the democratic party would have a lot to lose if we did that.
