Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced tonight that he is quitting the Republican party and changing his affiliation to independent.

The announcement came after Mr. Bloomberg gave a speech denouncing partisan gridlock in Washington, stirring renewed speculation that he is preparing to run as an independent or third-party candidate in 2008.

Giuliani, Clinton and Bloomberg would be three candidates from NY. How do they pick a home state favorite???

What are the material differences in Bloomberg's and Giuliani's position on major issues?

CNN said if he runs he'll spend up to $500 million of his own money. That will buy a lot of ads.

And that is why average Joe Citizen can never run for office, only the super rich that haven't got a clue what it's like to struggle. They are out of touch with the average citizen and know nothing about budgeting.
We don't need more millionaire's and billionaire's in Washington ... we need some folks that have worked hard for their money, that started with nothing and have most of it left.

It's about time. He was the poster boy for being a RINO.

You gotta love Bloomberg for the simple fact that he cannot be bought by anyone! He sticks to his guns when he believes in something and I admire that. No one is perfect, but at least the guy is sincere.

Seems to me that the Republican Party left Bloomberg as it became a neocon and bible thumping travesty.

You do realize that Bloomberg was a lifelong democrap until 2001 when he found it convenient to call himself a republican. Now he is changing again to independant. He seems to be prone to leaving parties.

Seems like this is just another person who wants to distance themselves from the republicans. They may not of had a problem with being a neocon or the bible thumping, but they do have a problem being associated with a party that is caught with lies, false statements, crime and worse. If they aren’t leaving the party by personal choice the legal system is removing them from the party by sending them to jail. http://www.airamericaplace.com/boards/style_emoticons/default/Toilet.gif (broken link)
