Tanning is a practice with absolutely no physical or mental benefit.
If anything should be taxed, its tanning and other things like it.
If I want to tan, you know what I do? I go to work, outside, and make money and get a tan. Hell, I still get taxed for that! I'm not worried about the girl from the Jersey shore, and her tanning salon.

ever heard of SAD?
If you work all day in the winter and miss daylight hours, how do you get sun exposure which is needed for Vitamin D?
If you cannot be in the sun, how do you get vitamin D?

Would a 10% tax on hair straightening products be allowed?
I doubt there'll ever be a tanning tax, but deliberately tanning is pretty near akin to smoking; it's done to try to look cool, and in the end it can lead to cancer.
By the way, here you have a thread that is generally negative on tanning, but the word itself triggers advertisements on the very pages of the thread for tanning salons, etc. The internet sure is great, huh?
Are hair straightening products as bad for our health as tanning beds? I think not.
Now wait a minute, is the tanning tax to discourage tanning because it is dangerous? So if I get this straight taxing something discourages that activity? So to further extrapolate this, a business tax discourages business activity? AUM, you are becoming a conservative!

There is a FEDERAL 10% tanning tax that went into effect today. It was part of the healthcare reform law.

Not exactly true, but I still don't think taxing it is racist.
