You can look at it that way, or you can look at it from the United States Military's point of view. More and more of today's youth are unwilling to serve in the military or unable due to physical and/or educational inability. Therefore they need to create technologies that will allow the few that can and will actually serve defend this once great nation of ours so that the rest of you guys can continue to listen to MP3 players instead of your teachers and play video games instead of going outside and getting some exercise.
They've been shooting down drones and target planes for years.

But have they been doing it with lasers? You seriously dont understand why this is a big deal? Being able to take down the enemy without putting our own childrens lives at risk? Whats a laser cost to shoot off? I'm assuming its far cheaper than missles, thereby lowering any future expenses for the military..
