WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.

War is a business venture. It's profitable to wage war if it isn't happening on your home turf...

War is prophecy in action. It's all a means to an end. And the end will come. No doubt about it.

war is part of life. Every living thing on the planet has wars between them. We are no different, it will always be here forever and ever.

That's funny. A few years back I had a conversation with a senior V.P. with Lockeed during the unveiling of the F-22 engine. I made some wise crack about the Kuwait war being good for buisness. His reply was, "what we need is a credible enemy". Outside of the contracting firms, makers of Humvees, these wars haven't been all that profitable in fact for the traditional "military industrial complex" they almost been catasropic as big ticket contracts for weapons systems have been canceled.

Of course a analysis that requires something more indepth than what can fit a slogan is all that attractive.

Let me ask a simple question.

Does the U.S. face an threat to its security from al-Qaeda? And if the answer to that question is yes, would it be sufficient to guard against that threat by purely domestic means?

Very wrong. Only primates wage wars and only the human primate is so technically advanced that the wars they (we) wage could possibly sterilize the planet of higher lifeforms. I'd be a lot less sloppy with language myself... "forever and ever"? Not likely.
