I have a mental image of fish going for bread tossed in the water.

Drug testing for Section 8 housing tenants. That crowd would thin out in a matter of minutes. I'm confident.

I'm with AeroGuy, lol. Definitly think the drug testing should do the trick nicely. After all if you have to have a drug test to work to pay for their free benefits seems only fair they take the test for your hand out.

Do they realize they are applying for "waiting list"?? The problem is there are people that legitimately need these things but the majority of the crowd does not.... wasted money if there isn't oversight and accountability...

That's one of those nice talking points which doesn't work in reality. Several states have drug testing laws but instead of saving money the amount saved ended up being less then the cost of the drug testing program so all it did was drive up costs and create another level of bureaucracy.

Every welfare queen in town will be in line. They accept a low pay job on purpose to qualify and then allow their "boyfriend" who earns much more to move in.

The sad part is the leadership of the Atlanta HUD if you can call it that. Lets see we are going to have thousands show up and we need porta johnies. Of course the tri area will have to be there for crowd control..They will have to pass out water and we will need emergency services if the crowd becomes unruly and hurts others.
The whole scenario could have been avoided by requiring those that want to apply to send a self addressed envelope and a letter requesting the application. Just think no porta johnies no money being spent for security and emergency services and most important no person getting hurt. I guess the main qualification for being a local HUD leader is have the common sense of a rock.
If I was in charge of HUD I would fire every person in Atlanta that was responsible for this fiasco on the grounds of stupidity.

I find it sad. These folks are waiting in line simply for a waiting list. 8-10,000 people in this heat. They only qualify if they make 1/2 of median income of 32,000. That's only $16,000 for a family a year. The kicker - the subsidy goes to private landlords - so much for private enterprise not wanting a hand out from the state or federal government.

I'm wondering if we curtailed our war spending - if things like this would be such a big deal. After all, if we are providing for folks in other countries, but not for our own citizens at home, I see something really wrong. We just cut the food stamp program to give money to States for salaries of teachers, etc.. Doesn't anyone know kids can't learn, unless they are fed. Reminds me more of Reagan - more than hope and change of Obama; bigger government, subsidies to private enterprises. No regard for the poor.
