Require that all pitbulls be sterilized. Make the punishment for owning an unsterilized pitbull severe. Eventually their numbers would plummet. Yeah, then some people couldn't own pits anymore. So what? They are not a necessity. There are plenty of other breeds that are loving and safer pets.
And the same could be said for other dangerous breeds.
I think that would be excellent practice for ALL breeds for a few years, with a possible registration requirement for certain breeding stock. Not sure what. It would require a lot of thought and implementation. I'm a firm believer in breeding dogs ONLY to better the breed. It's a manta amongst reputable breeders. Too in-depth to go into here.

You got that right!
Puppies of all breeds, including PB's, are being sold in Wal-Mart parking lots, for God's sake! Then those puppies get bred, and wow, it's unimaginable. And sickening.
Take a look at the area in any town where you will find the most pitbulls. Hint: It isn't in the suburbs.
People in the inner city own pitbulls, rottweilers, and dobermans because they have a reputation for being aggressive and good guard dogs. They then go out of their way to increase the aggressiveness of these dogs, which leads to a vicious circle. Dog fighting, which is well-known to be an inner city problem, also leads to more selective breeding of vicious dogs. Even at that, however, the owner's attitude toward and training of the dog has more to do with aggressiveness than their bloodline does.
Every time someone talks about pitbulls as a breed being vicious, I shake my head and chuckle. The people who make this claim have absolutely no knowledge of animals in general, and no knowledge of pitbulls in particular. They are merely hopping on the "devil dog" bandwagon because they believe the media hype. All those dog bites that are reported as being from a pitbull? Yeah, they aren't all pitbulls. They are merely classified that way because the dogs "look" like pitbulls or pitbull mixes. In many cases those dogs are boxer mixes, but you don't hear anyone hollering for a breed specific ban on boxers. Sheer stupidity on the part of the OP, and on the part of anyone who agrees with him.
