We have freedom of choice- to be obese or not. The government should not be in the business of telling us what to eat OR taking care of us when we get sick, especially because of those choices.

Why we even allow one person to drive the bus is beyond explanation, a community of hands should each apply their own initiative to the steering wheels in their collective seats, that way we wouldn't be so gosh darn reliant on a skilled, trained, competent individual at the lone wheel of the bus. Driving alone is just a waste of fuel, imposing our greed upon the earth for selfish purposes, lets just make all the commoners ride public transportation and be done with accidents, pollution and those hefty insurance costs, it only makes sense, right? Allowing stupid people to think for themselves is trouble too, no degree from a highly reputable institution, unacceptable? What business do they have expelling all that carbon dioxide, like their opinions could actually matter in comparison to the well educated elites.

Huh? You are saying getting sick is a choice? So people who eat right, exercise and live moral lives don't get cancer?

A kid learns eating habits at home, first of all.
A child does not have this freedom, does it?

Ms. Obama did not tell you what to eat, now did she? So this comment is simply a red herring to further whatever agenda it is that you have. Otherwise, you would have posted something that was true.

It seems to me that with rising health problems and over 1/3 of Americans being obese, especially with childhood problems, you might be interested in caring for your (generic) children so that they can grow up healthy and normal.

Obesity and Overweight: Topics | DNPAO | CDC
American society has become 'obesogenic,' characterized by environments that promote increased food intake, nonhealthful foods, and physical inactivity. Policy and environmental change initiatives that make healthy choices in nutrition and physical activity available, affordable, and easy will likely prove most effective in combating obesity.

FASTSTATS - Overweight Prevalence
Percent of adolescents age 12-19 years who are obese: 18% (2007-2008)
Percent of children age 6-11 years who are obese: 20% (2007-2008)
Percent of children age 2-5 years who are obese: 10% (2007-2008)

Adverse Effects of High Sodium Intake | eHow.com
Sodium is one of those products that can have severe consequences, especially if too much is ingested. Too much sodium can cause swelling or bloating of the extremities. This is primarily because the kidneys are responsible for eliminating salt from the body, and if there is too much salt, the kidneys cannot eliminate it fast enough and you will get fluid retention. The fluid retention is also capable of building around the heart. This will cause the heart to not be able to beat and function properly, which can cause high blood pressure, congestive heart failure or even strokes and heart attacks.

You can neglect the health problems associated with salt and fat intake; you can make up fear related comments about her speech, but if you choose, you can check these things out before you post.

Some sicknesses ARE caused by choice: lifestyle choices. It's no secret that smoking causes cancer. It's no secret that being overweight can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart and liver disease. Being obese is a lifestyle choice. I don't believe that government health care, publicly funded healthcare, should cover diseases caused by lifestyle choices. Of course people who do everything right still get cancer- that's more of an 'accident' and should be covered by government healthcare if a person is indigent.

I don't have anything against Ms. Obama or any other citizen speaking out against obesity, and sharing information about preventing obesity. I do have a problem with people thinking it's the GOVERNMENT'S responsibility- especially financial responsibility- to legislate businesses into being healthy, or make certain foods illegal. I also have a problem with the government using tax dollars to take care of people too uninformed or unintelligent to make good lifestyle choices and take care of their health.

Ultimately those obese people and their health problems will drive up health costs as well as use tax payer money to care for them in ERs across the country.

Easy way to solve that. No taxpayer funded health care. Nada. The government has no business in health care anyway.

Unfortunately, there are many things that the government would rather not have to be involved in but that they are because people have proven time and time again that they're too lazy, too ignorant, or too selfish to handle for themselves.

Don't blame the government - blame your fellow American.
