I pay in. My DH is a pretty saavy investor, but if we would have had everything in the market a few years ago we'd be in big trouble. We're still working to replace what went under water with the kid's college money. Privatizing SSI is a very bad plan. Pay in your SSI, and then live within or below your means so you can invest big chunks of cash elsewhere.

There are few legal loopholes. If you live off interest and dividends, you don't have to pay. If you work for certain government agencies, not the Feds, you are under a different plan. There are a number who work off the books and pay no taxes. If they do it all their lives they could regret it when they finally try to retire.

Yep.

I pay into a fund, that I have made no doubts that I do not want invested. My "fund" ranks 2nd in the nation. It comes out of my check. I miss it.

I don't miss that they took it out. I miss the security of not being allowed to not invest it. That pisses me off. Big time.

It is like watching a bunch of little dogs lap at a bowl of water. Or, if your from the islands, it is like watching all the cute fish turn into piranha with a hotdog.

Remember, the requirements for owning a dog are stiffer than those required to be a financial adviser. The dog has to be licensed and have shots.

No.... some of us are state government workers or teachers with our own state pensions and do not pay in to SS.

Being self employed, I have the option to pay, or not. I'm not penalized if I don't. It is not part of my income taxes.
Not part of your income taxes? Why sure it is. The money is put in the general fund and spent just like it was. Yeah, they keep track of SS money coming in but go ahead and spend it and that is the reason the "fund" is in the hole right now.

Yep, I pay into SS even though I have been collecting for over 12 years. I still have a tiny job so I get money withheld to pay my share.

It was when I was self-employed and I didn't know any different. I guess I should get after my tax preparer for not telling me about that.
