"Republican Representative Ron Paul on Thursday said he will push to examine the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decisions if he takes control of the congressional subcommittee that oversees the central bank as expected in January. Paul is currently the top Republican on the House of Representatives subcommittee that oversees domestic monetary policy, and is likely to head the panel when Republicans take control of the chamber in January."

Looking good for monetary reform.

He'll need all the support he can get. Those in control don't like to be put under the microscope and I have a feeling that auditing the Federal Reserve will be no easy task unless the American people speak out en-masse and demand it get done.

I hope so. It does need investigating and has for a long time.

However, I'm not optimistic. Paul is a long-time outsider and occassional screwballl who doesn't have a lot of support from the established party. While he seems to be Libertarian to the core, he can way out in some field or other.

Of course, now he has a few more fellow travelers in the House, though hardly enough to make up even near a majority, so we'll see. The next 2 years might be Ron Paul's day.

He will never be able to do this.

I think we should allow private companies to print their own money. This would allow people to stop dealing with the dollar. That might do more to help the economy than anything.

The government might go broke but who really gives a crap.

You know we've tried that before, right? The result was thousands of different currencies floating around with different values of exchange. It was a nightmare which nearly ruined the country. Let's not go there again.

And, before someone says it, we've had a National Bank before too, more than once. It didn't work either because the long arm of politics created havoc with the economy every time a different party came to power.

The Fed, for all its faults, was created in the first place because those other things didn't work. I'm no fan of the Fed and believe it needs to be more tightly regulated for the public good, but it HAS brought an economic stability we'd never known before and done it for a long time.

The Fed had a lot to do with the Great Depression. The dollar hs also dropped in value significantly since it was created.

The Fed was created by a handful of wealthy people, to further enrich themselves and give them control over our country.

What we had after Andrew Jackson destroyed the National Bank...nothing. It worked well. U.S. Notes could be issued directly by the Treasury.

If it worked well, why didn't it stay that way?
