Exactly HOW do you get away with not paying into SS? Legally, that is?

Just watch the fight in Congress when the deficit ceiling issue gets started! The Republicans are saying right now that they will NOT vote to increase the debt ceiling UNLESS they can cut "social programs"....WHICH INCLUDES SOCIAL SECURITY. The Republicans are saying that they will let the US default on its debt, throw the entire world economy into a tailspin (including US) by voting no on increasing the debt ceiling UNLESS they can cut spending for social programs. Check it out. Didn't you know that "social programs" INCLUDES SOCIAL SECURITY?

So am I and I have never been told that I have an option regarding whether or not I want to pay SS. In fact, being self employed requires that I pay ALL the social security, unlike people who are employees and the employer pays half of their SS! It's like 15% rather than 7-something.

You pay 15.3%, your half and the employer's half, when you are self employed. That includes something like 1.45% for Medicare.

I read the tax code and do my own taxes.

My 1040 bottom line is "0".

I don't do my own taxes. I have an accountant/bookkeeper do my taxes. So, what are you saying? Your bottom line is zero, so you EARN NO INCOME WHATSOEVER? How do you live if you earn nothing?
