...stupidity crept over the giant with the stealth of twilight, a product less of one abrupt moment than of a thousand moments of complacency, of resting on laurels, of allowing curiosity to be teased and bullied out of bright children, of dumbing down textbooks so kids could get better grades with less work, of using ``elite'' like a curse word. And, of behaving as if knowing things, and being able to extrapolate from and otherwise make critical use of, the things one knows, was a betrayal of some fundamental human authenticity -- some need to keep it real.

Well, it was a good read until he said we're all busy watching the Jersey Shore. Good prose, but it's not a new story. Ask any parent of normal intelligence who've put their kids through school and then college. We've seen the dumbing down of America for years.

Did you have a point you wanted to make by sharing the link?

Yeah - It's not in the best interests of those in charge to have an electorate that is well-informed and well-skilled in critical thinking skills. To that end, there has been a purposeful effort to create Americans who are literate/numerate enough to follow instructions, but not to create new thought.

America is becoming the land of the stupid, home of the inane.

No, just the land of the politically correct.

Yes and here is an example-one of my "supervisors" at work showed me a website for "saving the tree octopus" and she couldn't believe that more people wouldn't contribute to the cause...I replied "yeah it's too bad" thinking she was joking...she wasn't...I left the website link at work but she really believed it..

If I want to read parables I'll pick up a bible somewhere.

I prefer cold, hard statistics, thank you.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that America is failing in its efforts to educate the masses. Newer methods of education are not better. Do some research on this. Andrew Carnegie and some of the global elite, back in the early 20th century decided to dumb down the populace. They didn't want poets and scholars. They wanted workers. Worker bees. Sheeple.

Do some research and have your eyes opened.

We could start by getting the Federal Government totally out of education. Abolish the dept of Ed.

I wonder what Thomas Jefferson would say.....

Some in this thread missed that the article opens with a criticism of creationism and intelligent design in the classroom. In that vein Bill O'Reilly is a leader in the dumbing down race:
