Most health experts point to sodas as sources of empty calories and culprits in America's obesity epidemic. New research shows that there's even more reasons for folks to can their cola cravings. A study presented at the 2011 International Stroke Conference found that people who consumed diet soda every day were significantly more likely to suffer from stroke, heart attack, and vascular death than people who never drank diet colas. Just as the media firestorm over those findings was starting to die down, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) revealed even more dark secrets about dark colas. According to the CSPI, soda brands like Coca-Cola and Pepsi derive their "caramel colorings" from chemicals known to cause cancer.

Don't worry. Coke and Papsi will pay them off and they will come out with a new study next year saying their products are beneficial to your health.

Either way I am OK. I probably drink only 6 sodas of any kind in a year.

Wow. Good to know. I used to drink soda on a daily basis at my Grandma's after school. I used to drink Mountain Dew and Coca-Cola quite often. Now I only drink soda about once or twice a month, usually Coca-Cola or Sprite.

This is the problem with people who know nothing of science commenting on studies.

It was not a randomized, blinded, prospective study and therefore has little, if any meaning.

1. The same people who consumed diet soda may have participated in other activities (there is an increased incidence of alcohol and cigarette consumption among diet soda drinkers). The fact that a volcano may have erupted in Italy today cannot be considered the cause of a traffic accident in the midwest./

2. From a statistics standpoint, if we perform one intervention, and look for a high number of effects, there is an increased possibility that the causual "link" occurred only due to chance. A statistical modification of an ANOVA comparison, called a Neuman-Keuls test for multiple comparisons, is needed to demonstrate statistical validity. As this study did not use this analysis, (and I guarantee you they did not) it is completely worthless.

Garbage in- garbage out. Leave science to those who are experienced in science. Further, do not read garbage journals, as the editorial reviews and peer reviews are poor. There is a reason that it is harder to get an article in NEJM than the European Journal of Irreproducible Results.

3. Articles presented at meetings are usually abstracts submitted to the meeting that have not been accepted in full form publication for the journal. Given that they are an abstract, they have undergone cursory peer review, but not has had the rigorous review that is required for a full publication. Let's see if this "study" is actually ever accepted for full publication.

hmmm, more crap from the food police. at one time or another the food police have told us to stop using saccarine, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, sodium nitrates, high fat foods, high fiber foods, low fat foods, low fiber foods, etc. etc. etc.

in most of these warnings, they never said how much was allowed. take saccarine for instance. it was "found" to cause cancer in..........wait for it......

lab mice. and the amount they fed the lab mice was 300 times what the average human would ingest in their lifetime. give someone enough of anything and it will end up bad for them. however as has been said in the bible, and many other places, all things in moderation. dont drink 30 cases of soda per day for the rest of your life, and you very likely will not have to deal with getting cancer.
