Of course, I mean the United States of America.

Right and Left are demonized and what passes for our leaders appear to either have no clue what to do or driven by their ideology.

No one truly wants to see starving people in the streets (one extreme) and no one wants to see a socialist state (other extreme). No one wants to destroy the middle class. But it seems policies are doing the above depending on who is in office although the middle class gets knocked about no matter what.

Does anyone truly want to sacrifice a bit of their current lifestyle to save the country? (I literally mean save, not trying to be dramatic)

Time for a new party? Possible? Other options?

Are the problems so deep that it is impossible to fix without causing hardship to major elements across income levels?

Are there any historical parallels?

It certainly seems to be heading in that direction. Although, I still think compromise is possible, and even at times reached, it seems there is a growing trend, among the constituents and politicians alike to subvert the system and promote their agenda through non conventional means if they don't get what they want through traditional, historical and, dare I say, Constitutionally defined means.

More and more I see peoples political beliefs becoming absolutes, and any compromise viewed as a failure. This works to further divide people.

I suspect as the economy improves(hopefully) this will wane a bit and folks will be more willing to compromise, but as long as times are hard(in a relative sense) and we face more and more hardships in our daily life I don't think many, especially the most vocal, will be willing to compromise

Faith in ones party, I feel, is too strong. We believe that one group will save us and another will harm us(waiting for the obligatory comment about the moonbats or repugs in reply) and this line of thinking can be destructive. Personal responsibility, on both sides of the political spectrum is being replaced with faith in the party and the politicians, who time and time again prove themselves to be corrupt and self serving.

Eventually we'll get sick of the left, right, left, right and the sensible majority of our population will find a way to meet in the middle and realize that kernels of truth on both sides should be watered.

I do not agree with either of you. The democratic party has been far too successful with their identity politics political strategy. Our american liberals/leftists embarked on an ill advised path with the multiculturalism idea. As an american of traditional america I see no way back. I feel we are hopelessly divided. Perhaps with proper leadership we could find a way to coexist for awhile but we lack even that. I vote for a divorce.......and borders. Good fences make good neighbors.

Right now?

Yes, it is too polarized.

Something worse than the housing crash will need to happen before people stop worrying about trivial crap, by which I mean the agenda of social conservatives/authoritarians.

As long as people prefer fallacy to logic, there will always be polarization of opposing ideas.

In all fairness you should have included socialists/totalitarians.

I like my neighbors. I like walking down the sidewalk and talking to them. The last thing in the world that I would want is a fence between us. Of course, we voted that my neighborhood have no fences. I guess there is the difference. It is probably a good thing for you that you live out in the middle of nowhere sense you obviously don't like people.

I see this as a matter of culture. We possess differing cultural norms.

I like people just fine. I especially appreciate most of my neighbors. It doesn't change the fact however, that american liberals possess different values from my own, which are different from that of latinos, which are different from........ You can see the morass we find ourselves in. Hooray for multiculturalism.
