As strongly anti-war as I am in general, I am not so naive to suggest that we should not prepare for war or even be willing to engage in it. War should be the very last resort, the last option, not the policy of first choice as concocted by some think tank full of 30 somethings. If you must engage in war, then you do it in a biblical fashion and you do it 100% with a clear mission objective stated up front. Accomplish your goal and you leave.
The only nation our government should be concerned with building is our own.
I agree.
This pisspoor effort they call a war, is just getting our boys and girls killed over there.
What should have been done way back when is simple.
You bomb those responsible and their allies.
You destroy their power.
You announce if there is another attack we will be back.
You warn all other nations that if they choose to allow your enemies safe havens, they will be next.
You repeat as necessary.
You do not offer to rebuild.
You do not offer aid.
Is it any better that after a decade it continues to be ran like a pop warner football game where no one keeps score, no one has a rule book, and no one really gives two flips, while two drunken fathers on opposing teams try to remain upright long enough everyone to get tired and go home?
Tn, I have three things I want to cover after reading the article in the OP.
The first is your analogy of the Afghan war being run like a Pop Warner football game. I used to be a coach in Pop Warner football and it is my humble opinion that you have your head up your rear end. You surely have never been to a PW game or you had a one time, very bad experience, because without doubt, PW football games are run and managed far better than the Afghan war.
The second is as always "the golden rule". I really can't think of another good reason why we do not get out of Afghanistan. Heck, I think the whole country could be managed with predator drones alone.
Lastly, I am shocked at how many articles I have been reading lately linked to the the Huffington Post.

You know how many times I've posted links to the American Conservative magazine on this forum and how they have derided both Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as our growing intervention in the greater Middle East. Most people on the left roll their eyes and scoff, most folks on the right dismiss the more traditional conservative position of ' Less Interventionism ' in favor of our modern Neoconservativism, where Liberal and progressive expansionism (the good side) met with the national defense types from the right (again the good side) and formed a weird incestuous union where the bastid child is the worst possible outcomes for either, yet this is where most people are.
Whether you are someone from the left who may oppose things on humanitarian grounds or someone on the right who opposes the sheer cost which are borrowed immorally from future generations with interest, there is a common ground here, at least on this one issue. I think people are beginning to see that while they may viscerally hate the opposing parties for whatever reasons, at least on this single issue they need and must come together, because to do otherwise is utter disaster that will be carried on the backs of the working class of America.

Total annihilation means nuclear. We aren't going to do that nor should we. And anything short of doing that pretty much means that we can't win.
Time to go.
Not quite....
The Allies all but destroyed Germany in WWII.
