Hey union, if you want to play dirty we can play dirty too.

Quote:
Congressional lawmakers hope to punish union members by tying strikes to Food Stamp benefits with new legislation, HR 1135, the Welfare Reform Act.

Rep. Scott (R-SC) Rep. Garrett and Rep. Burton (R-IN) have introduced legislation aimed at stopping individuals and families from getting food through the Food Stamp program if they go on strike.

In the case of loss of income due to any striking family member, the bill adds that a "family unit shall not receive an increased allotment as the result of a decrease in the income of the striking member or members of the household."
The legislation is designed to specifically punish union members and their children, by depriving them of the ability to buy food through the Food Stamp program.

As it should be. Your choice, your problem to deal with.

I can't wait for the day when all the stinking unions and their thugs and whiners are nothing but an unpleasant memory.

Absolutely, this is nuts unions employees want to go on strike with no consequences, hardly a heroic struggle.

This bill will go nowhere.

We could have the same arguments about women who continue to have kids with 2,3,4 different guys and just apply for more "assistance" without having the means to take care of the kids. On the one hand, these women (and men) should stand on their own and be totally responsible for the care and providing for these kids. On the other hand, if they don't get assistance, the kids are the ones who get hurt here - with little food, little guidance, etc. And that is how this bill will be framed by the other side - i.e., the Republicans want kids to starve to death when income is lowered for someone fighting for basic civil rights.

This is slightly different, these are folks with jobs who refuse to do them.

I doubt there are any union employees foolish enough to let their children starve so the union bosses can get a bigger Cadillac.

Right!! And then children under the age of twelve can again work 12-16 hours a day in sweat shops. Women can be locked in at their work stations so they can burn to death in fires! Bosses can again harass workers as they have no recourse. That bad old Department of Labor can be shut down!
Some people need to take a look at just why the unions were formed and how they helped to form the middle class here in the U.S.

So....you can be denied food stamps for striking but if you are a thug selling drugs, living on section 8, you will be okay to get the gov'ment stamps ?

Not saying pro union here but where does the boundary begin & end here, for drug dealers with pockets full of cash, living on the gov'ment dime, aka food stamps and all the perks of screwing the gov'ment daily ? But the strikers won't be eating apparently..

( fyi : I was in a union and not terribly crazy about it.. )

Throw in bringing back "separate, but equal" No environmental control, people living in mass poverty, 80-100 hour work weeks, absolutely no benefits,..That is the ultra right's utopia.

Are the regulations for administering the food stamp program federal regulations, or are they state regulations?

In Arkansas, the rules already state that homes cannot get food stamps due to a household member going on strike.

Food Stamp Policy - Sections 1700 - 1930 (http://www.arkansas.gov/dhs/webpolicy/Food%20Stamp%20Certification/FSC1700_1930_new.htm#FSC1700 - broken link)

Soooo... sooo.... wrong. Of course you must believe that if the unions go, then the laws that have been enacted and implemented will go away too?

buh bye, public unions. Don't let the door hit you on your collective azzes.
