“Our expectation is that it’s not going to have a big impact,” said LaDonna A. Pavetti, of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

SOCIAL SECURITY The government would continue to make Social Security payments to the 53 million beneficiaries. “We will continue to process applications for benefits, but it might take longer if a shutdown does occur,” said Mark Hinkle, a spokesman for Social Security. “Our local offices will open for limited services. We are working on the specifics.”
A huge backlog of applications for Social Security disability benefits would grow even larger, agency officials said.
HEALTH CAREMedicare, the program for people who are 65 and older or disabled, would continue to pay doctors and hospitals for several weeks, using money from its trust funds...
PASSPORTS As a national security agency, the State Department would continue operations, but some activities, like issuing passports for travelers and visas for foreigners coming to the United States, could stop or face significant delays. Emergency consular services would continue.
POSTAL SERVICE Post offices would maintain their regular hours and mail delivery would continue.
FOOD STAMPS Since the government makes the money available to states by the beginning of each month, advocates for food stamp recipients predicted no immediate impact on benefits. “They should be O.K. for the month of April,” said Stacy
Dean, a food stamp expert at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
MILITARY Active-duty personnel would continue to work and earn pay during a shutdown, but would generally not receive paychecks until Congress appropriated money at some later date. While troops in combat zones and assisting Japanese earthquake relief would continue operations, they might not be paid until a new budget was approved....
PARKS AND MUSEUMS National parks would be closed and the Smithsonian Institution’s museums are planning to close.
WELFARE (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). Benefits have been authorized through the end of September, so experts predicted that cash assistance payments would not be affected. States share in the costs and could substitute their own money to make up for delays in the arrival of federal dollars.
This isn't Obama's fault. The Republican House is trying to push a political agenda dealing with environmental protection and abortion. They'll take the hit for the shutdown like they did in 95.
I do wish Reid and Obama would concede and accept a 1-week spending extension.
Yeah, in 1995 there was no internet, no Faux news, little talk radio.
I realize american liberals/leftists/assorted marxists don't approve of having a press without a common bias but you guys really need to get over it. If we didn't have fox news serving fully half of this country someone would have to invent them for cryin' out loud.
I honestly recall Clinton as being some kind of hero because he balanced the budget. I don't see Skippy coming out that well here if he keeps trying to put through his monstrous budget.
The president could ensure soldiers get their checks using his executive power — it’s been done in the past — but President Barack Obama won’t do it, Levin said on his Thursday program. “Now listen to me folks, with a simple signature the president can ensure our military personal, who are already at enormous risk, both personal and financial, and sacrifice so much, and so do their families, will be protected financially – with a signature,” Levin said. “And he won’t do it. Reagan did it. Clinton did it. But Obama won’t do it. Now why do you think that is?”
Though it does explain the the O'men calls the Republican bill 'a distraction'. He knows he can cover the military, he just wants more money to squander on golf and other cronies.
I do get tired of Republicans trying to shut down the government but attempting to deny they did it. If their goal wasn't to shut down the government then why did they keep moving the goal posts? They'd make a demand, like their usual spinless selves the Dems would cave, the Republicans would change the goal line and make additional demands, to which the Dems would cave again, and now we're on the third set of demands out of them. The Dems have caved, and caved, and given in, and give in, and yet the Republicans are still demanding more. Let's pretend to be honest for just one minute and admit it's the Republicans, who only control 1/2 of 1/3rd of the government, who are deliberately forcing this shut down. If it wasn't true then they wouldn't be constantly changing the goal posts. They caused this and now they need to wear it around their necks.
