Rep. Gingrey's bill would eliminate the extended family visa categories (e.g., siblings and married sons and daughters of citizens, etc.), thus ending “chain migration". Chain migration is the process where seemingly endless “chains” of foreign nationals are allowed to immigrate to the United States, since our laws allow citizens and lawful permanent residents to bring in their non-nuclear, adult family members. It is the primary mechanism that has caused legal immigration in this country to quadruple since the 1960s.

In a change from previous versions, the 2011 legislation would also eliminate the parents category and instead create a renewable 5-year visa class for the parents of U.S. citizens. The number of parents who came to the United States in 2009 was 82,000. However, the parents would not be eligible to work in the United States and a U.S. citizen son or daughter would have to provide satisfactory proof that they can financially support their immigrant parents, including proof of health care coverage while the parents are residing in the United States

Furthermore, H.R.692 would reduce the annual number of family-sponsored immigrant visas available by 111,800.
I never understood those Chain migrations. They could be endless. 111,800 is still a lot.

What a vindictive, cold-hearted policy that would be.

"Oh, yes, Mr. Immigrant, you're more than welcome here...but your family can just stay the hell away."

Maybe if you listened more and talked less, you might learn something instead of just spouting off about things you nothing about.

People have learned how to scam the system. The SSA runs the SSI program. People come here legally and establish citizenship.

They then request that their parents be allowed to come here. They sign forms stating they will be the sponsors, IE. house clothe and feed them.

After they get here the parents go to the SSA office and apply for SSI. They claim their sponsors (children) will no loner provide house clothes and food for them.

These parents are granted coverage under the SSI systema and start collecting checks from the US taxpayer and have contributed not one thin dime in taxes.

What needs to be done, if the parents renege on their promise to clothe, feed and house these people, they should be returned to their home country. It wouldn't take long for the word to get out and this scamming would stop.

I hope it does stop.

An anchor baby cannot sponsor parents or siblings who are in the country illegally. When that baby turns 18 he/she can sponsor out-of-country brother and sisters who who when have to join a 15 year long queue - that's a 33 year wait from birth to getting a sibling into the country.
