Women of a liberated generation wrestle with their eager-to-grow-up daughters—and their own pasts

In the pale-turquoise ladies' room, they congregate in front of the mirror, re-applying mascara and lip gloss, brushing their hair, straightening panty hose and gossiping: This one is "skanky," that one is "really cute," and so forth.

All of which brings me to a question:
Why do so many of us not only permit our teenage daughters to dress like this—like prostitutes, if we're being honest with ourselves—but pay for them to do it with our AmEx cards?

No one wears pantyhose any more.

Seriously, people have been writing this drek at least since I went to middle school in 1961. All parents think this way, it seems.

RCCB do you just hate that I have nothing but disdain for media induced hyper sexualization of children and I'm still a feminist?

Seems to me I heard a similar complaint from a liberal black man on this forum so you're going to have to bust out of your own assumptions. When under 18 these kids are under parental wing and peer pressure fashion police be damned, you're not leaving this house dressed to attend MTV.

Oh, people have been ranting about young women dressing like prostitutes since the 1920s.

I'd have to see a different picture than the one that accompanies the article to know if this guy is just seriously overreacting or giving a truthful depiction. Because from just what we can see? I think those girls look just fine. Adorable, in fact.

Yeah I didn't see anything wrong with this picture. Of course this is the Wall Street Journal...

I have a photo of me from 1972, when I was 11, dressed in a fuchsia, pink, chartreuse and white striped minidress, with a plastic ring, hip-slung belt, fishnet stockings and white patent leather go-go boots.
