How do you know when a movie should be watched? (military, Jesus)

The Passion was pretty much torture porn. 2 hours of a guy getting tortured does not a good movie make, I don't care whose getting tortured. Of all the things to focus on they choose the most bloody.

I never understood that genre of films. I saw hostel one time, out of curiosity and thought it sucked. It caught my attention but I felt like I needed a shower after watching it.

Who specifically are you referring to? A strawman? Ebert gave it 4 stars. Movie companies want a sure thing -and will make a movie on any topic if the risk is low enough. An unhinged Mel Gibson came to them for money to direct a bloody film about the crucifixion. Their decision wasn't based on any leftist ideology but on right wing business pragmatism.
